Swimming is generally accepted as one of the best forms of exercise.  But what makes swimming so good?  Below are ten reasons why...

1) Swimming and having confidence and awareness in and of the water helps you remain safe in the water and reduce the risk of drowning.

2) Swimming is one of the few ways of improving your strength, stamina and suppleness all at the same time.

3) Swimming is an easily accessible and in-expensive form of exercise... the equiptment doesn't cost much, most towns have a swimming pool and as the UK is an island your never far away from the sea which is free to swim in.

4) Swimming provides an excellent cardiovascular workout, strengthening your heart muscle and improving the delivery of oxygen to muscles and if you swim all the different strokes will use all the main muscle groups, toning your entire body.

5) Swimming is something that people of all ages and abilities can do from 6 weeks to over 100, beginner to athlete!

6) Swimming helps to keep your joints flexible, in particular the neck, shoulders, hips and groin.

7) Swimming is kind on your body as the body is naturally bouyant in the water...This makes it a particularly good option for people who find weight-bearing land based exercise challenging, for example, swimming can suit those with arthritis, back or weight problems, women who are pregnant or for people needing rehabilitation.

8) Swimming can benefit your mind as well as your body. Swimming long distances can be quite a meditative excercise, allowing you to focus on stroke tempo and giving you time to think without the interuption of the phone, email or children! Many psychatrists now prescribe swimming as an aid to improving mental health.

9) Swimming in the coolness of the swimming pool can be most refreshing on a hot summers day.

10) Swimming opens up so many more activities and there is so much fun to be had by the pool or in the sea!  Being able to swim and being confident in the water can open up a whole range of activities... water polo, windsurfing, triathlon, snorkelling, scuba diving, water ski-ing or wake-boarding, to name a few.
